NBER study: 19.7% of LinkedIn users retroactively edit profiles; AI skills surge post-ChatGPT

A new NBER working paper using Revelio Labs monthly data from 2020-2026 finds that 19.7% of established U.S. LinkedIn users retroactively edit titles or descriptions of past jobs. These 'time-travel' edits are tied to job transitions and show sharp increases in AI-related language after 2022, with declines in work-from-home and DEI terms. LLM-associated writing markers surge after ChatGPT, especially among less-educated groups and MBAs from lower-ranked programs, revealing heterogeneous AI-assisted profile editing.
