Cambridge Expert Warns: AI Sandboxing Lags Behind Rapid Model Capability Advances

Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh, director of the AI: Futures and Responsibility Programme at the University of Cambridge, told TechCrunch that the recent spate of AI loss of containment incidents shows that sandboxing and testing environment controls are failing to keep pace with model capabilities.
He emphasized that the risk is exacerbated because AI companies often test next-gen, unreleased models with normal safety safeguards disabled to probe their true capabilities.
