HII Signs $900M Deal to Deploy Autonomous Welding Robots for Navy Shipbuilding

Shipbuilder HII has signed agreements worth up to $900 million over 7 years with Path Robotics and GrayMatter Robotics to integrate autonomous welding, sanding, and grinding into Navy shipbuilding.

The technologies will be applied across the construction of aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, and unmanned vessels. Structured with performance-based tech readiness gates rather than acting as R&D contracts, HII plans to outsource over 2.5 million hours of shipbuilding work to these autonomous systems in 2026, representing a 30% increase from 2025.
