At AASF 2026, Google Fellow Amin Vahdat drew a powerful analogy between current AI infrastructure and the steam engine. He noted that just as James Watt's 5x efficiency improvement triggered an explosion in coal demand via Jevons' Paradox, the efficiency leap of Transformers over LSTMs is causing compute demand to skyrocket exponentially.

He emphasized that AI acts as a brain multiplier. Today's intelligence is vastly insufficient to solve complex challenges like curing diseases or providing personalized education, indicating we are in the early stages of a massive societal transition.
