200ms Cloud Latency is Fatal for Robots: Why Edge Inference is Mandatory

A robotics expert points out that relying on cloud inference is a fatal flaw in actual deployment. For a robot moving at 2 meters per second, a 200ms round trip to AWS means 40cm of movement with zero feedback. In human-heavy environments, a 40cm blind spot can easily cause severe safety incidents.
Therefore, top-performing companies choose to run everything on the edge (like Jetson or custom silicon). Even though they pay 3x the hardware cost, it avoids the "latency tax." Cloud inference for robots is merely a demo trick, not a deployment strategy. This proves inference is not one-size-fits-all and will inevitably verticalize into full-stack solutions for hundreds of use cases.
