AI's Hidden Productivity Trap: Engineers Face Expectations Inflation

AI has dramatically sped up individual tasks for engineers, such as writing code, generating documentation, and creating tests. However, this introduces a counterintuitive side effect: as the cost of completing tasks drops, organizations simply expect more output.
An engineer who used to deliver five tasks might now be assigned ten. Consequently, AI-driven productivity gains don't automatically translate into more free time; instead, they inflate workload expectations. The author argues that the real question about AI isn't about how much faster we are, but what we are doing with the reclaimed time. If the answer is merely clearing more tickets, we are measuring productivity while missing the actual opportunity.
