We Gave a Village Personal AI Agents. Here's What Happened

Cosmos Institute and Edge City conducted a real-world experiment called "Agent Village," equipping hundreds of participants in a month-long popup village with personal AI agents. The goal was to observe the societal impact when agents are deeply integrated into community life.
The core focus was whether these agents would help people form relationships and participate more fully, or if they would displace human interaction and introduce new friction. The experiment revealed nuanced questions about human autonomy: does expanding a person's capacity to act through agents weaken their ability to form and revise their own judgments? Furthermore, what happens when numerous agents faithfully serving their principals collectively strain a community's attention, resources, or cohesion? The project provides empirical insights into the future of multiplayer AI.
