Prominent Scholar to Google: Stop Reducing DeepMind to Just an LLM Lab
pmddomingos · x · 2026-08-11
Pedro Domingos, a prominent professor in machine learning, publicly called out Google CEO Sundar Pichai, arguing that forcing DeepMind to focus solely on Large Language Models (LLMs) is like "shoving a square peg into a round hole."
He noted that this strategy is destroying DeepMind's traditional strengths and Google will likely still lose the race. Domingos suggested that Google should let DeepMind focus on AI beyond LLMs—where it truly excels—and create a nimble new lab to run the LLM race instead.
