OpenClaw, an Open-Source AI Coding Agent Born from a Mobile Pain Point, Hits 4.7M Weekly Downloads

Last November, @steipete was frustrated by the lack of tools to interact with coding agents from his phone, so he built OpenClaw. Within months, it exploded into one of the world's largest open-source AI projects, attracting nearly 3,000 contributors and peaking at 4.7 million weekly downloads.

At Startup School 2026, he recounted the project's viral growth, mistakes made during scaling, and why he eventually stopped using the product he built for himself. He emphasized that the best products often stem from personal annoyances, and as building gets easier, focus becomes critical, noting that "fun is velocity."
