Google's Medical AI AMIE Featured in Nature for RL-Driven Disease Management

A new publication in Nature from Google Research and DeepMind details the advancement of AMIE, their research medical AI.
While previous studies showed AMIE could match Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) in clinical reasoning, this new step moves AMIE beyond one-off diagnostic conversations toward treating and managing diseases over time using clinical guidelines and drug formularies.
By applying Reinforcement Learning in simulations (ResidencyRL), the model evolves from having broad medical knowledge to becoming a more competent clinician. As simulations grow richer, the competencies they develop will also expand.
