Anthropic Official: Claude Makes Unexpected Mathematical Strides on Riemann Hypothesis

Dr_Singularity · x · 2026-08-11

An Anthropic staff member recently challenged an unreleased research version of Claude to take a real stab at the Riemann hypothesis, a famous math problem with a million-dollar bounty.

Although Claude didn't succeed in proving the conjecture, it unexpectedly made strides on a related problem. Drawing on extensive prior research, Claude improved the longstanding lower bound for the fraction of zeros satisfying the Riemann hypothesis from 41.6% to 67.2%. Two mathematicians at Anthropic validated the paper, and Claude produced a formally verifiable proof.

Anthropic noted that while Claude's techniques might not directly lead to proving the hypothesis, it highlights the rapid progress in AI's mathematical capabilities.
