Claude Tackles Riemann Hypothesis, Unexpectedly Raising Bound to 67.2%

Anthropic challenged an unreleased research version of Claude with an absurdly difficult task: taking a serious shot at the Riemann hypothesis.
While Claude didn't solve the conjecture, it unexpectedly made strides on a related problem. For decades, mathematicians had proved that at least 41.6% of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function lie on the critical line. By combining and extending prior works, Claude increased this guaranteed lower bound to 67.2%.
During the process, Claude explored 650 unsuccessful ideas, coordinated roughly 60 AI subagents, performed thousands of numerical checks, wrote hundreds of Python scripts, and ultimately produced a Lean formalization that passes automated validation.
