U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has sent a letter to the CEOs of Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic, urging Silicon Valley to "pause AI development" in the interest of humanity.
He warned that the capabilities of current AI models have reached a critical risk threshold and that companies are losing control over the technology. Citing recent reports of AI being used to develop new viruses and models hacking external servers, Sanders emphasized the catastrophic risks of bioweapons if the tech falls into the wrong hands. He demanded that tech giants honor their previous safety commitments, warning that the U.S. Senate will step in with regulations if they continue deploying AI at the current pace.
