EPFL Study: Conscious Vision is a Delayed, Edited Movie, Not a Live Stream

A new study from EPFL published in PLOS Biology suggests that human conscious vision does not operate as a live stream, but rather resembles a delayed and edited movie.
The researchers identified two successive patterns of brain activity:
- Unconscious Encoding (200ms): Early occipital activity tracks individual visual events outside conscious access.
- Conscious Perception (450ms): Later central-parietal activity integrates these signals into the unified experience we actually report.
The study also highlights the phenomenon of "postdiction," where events occurring later can retroactively reshape how we perceived earlier moments. This provides a cognitive science perspective for understanding the perception mechanisms of multimodal large models and AGI.
