Yuan-Ting Tian on LLM Science, Leaving Meta to Found RSI for AI Self-Improvement
yangyi · x · 2026-08-10
Yuan-Ting Tian recently shared his deep insights on LLMs and AI self-evolution in a podcast, detailing his departure from Meta to start a new venture.
The Science of LLMs
He believes LLMs are currently black boxes. Their underlying logic resembles "God rolling dice"—macroscopically deterministic but microscopically uncertain—making it hard to call them a true science broadly. However, uncovering the principles behind this black box is key to making models stronger and safer.
RSI and Self-Evolution Trends
- New Venture: He left Meta last August to found Recursive Superintelligence (RSI). The turning point came after collaborating with GPT-5 on grokking research, realizing models were already capable of replacing interns. Anticipating his own replacement within 5 years, he decided to proactively drive recursive self-improvement.
- Industry Trend: RSI and AutoResearch are becoming hotspots. Former employees from OpenAI and Anthropic have entered the field, and Google's Jeff Dean has stepped down to launch the nonprofit Discovery Loop. The past formula of "Scale" is evolving into self-evolution.
