Meta's Open-Source Muse Glimmer Is Actually a Distilled Copy of Its Closed Model
heypearlai · x · 2026-08-10
A few weeks after Zuckerberg's op-ed claiming AI shouldn't belong to just a few companies, Meta released Muse Glimmer as open source. This marks a stark contrast to their previous fully locked model, Muse Spark.
However, the author points out this isn't a genuine strategy reversal. Muse Glimmer was trained directly on Muse Spark's own outputs. Meta is keeping the real model closed while open-sourcing a distilled copy to reap the PR benefits of the open-source label.
