Anthropic's CEO previously described powerful AI as a "country of geniuses in a data center," predicting it could handle most software engineering tasks within 6-12 months. However, echoing a WIRED report, the author points out that current AI agents are far from autonomous.
Official docs for tools like Claude Code and Cursor still require developers to plan meticulously upfront, add custom verifiers, review every code diff, and reset chats during context drift. This heavy reliance on manual intervention proves they function merely as tools, not autonomous geniuses. Furthermore, getting agents to work demands significant investments of time, money, and personnel, making cheaper alternatives like scripts, focused tools, or standard chatbots more reliable in many scenarios.
