Sakana AI announced that its detailed research paper on 'The AI Scientist' has been published in Nature. The system uses foundation models to autonomously complete the entire machine learning research lifecycle, from idea generation and experimentation to paper writing and automated peer review.

- Turing Test for Science: Previously, a fully AI-generated, unmodified paper received an average score of 6.33 in the rigorous double-blind review process of an ICLR 2025 workshop, surpassing 55% of human-written submissions.
- System Mechanism: Given only a general direction, the system parallelizes idea generation, literature review, and experimental design using Agentic Tree Search. It ultimately handles chart inspection and LaTeX formatting using vision-capable models.
- Automated Review & Scaling Laws: The team also built an automated review system acting as an Area Chair following NeurIPS guidelines, and introduced the 'Scaling Laws for Science' regarding the expansion of AI-generated scientific knowledge.
