OpenAI Refuses MFA Reset Despite Full ID Proof, Loses Paying User to Claude
RealReevee · reddit · 2026-08-10
A long-time paying ChatGPT user lost access after losing their authenticator device and faced rigid OpenAI support. Despite providing comprehensive proof of ownership—including email, phone, government ID, credit card statements, and historical chat logs—OpenAI refused to reset their MFA.
Frustrated by the inflexible security policy, the user announced they are abandoning ChatGPT for Claude. They noted the irony that ChatGPT itself kindly helped them figure out how to export their data without being able to log in normally.
