Chrome Silently Downloads 4GB Gemini Nano Model Sparking Privacy Backlash

Users discovered that Google Chrome silently downloads a massive 4GB on-device AI model, Gemini Nano (named weights.bin in a hidden folder), without explicit consent. Even if manually deleted, the browser forcefully reinstalls it in the background.
This has sparked concerns over bandwidth and environmental impact. Pushing a 4GB payload to 1 billion users could consume 240 gigawatt-hours of energy and generate 60,000 tons of CO2. Google claims the model powers local features like "Help me write" and scam detection.
