GitHub Models Retired: Free Token Subsidies Likely Crushed by Coding Agent Costs

Developer Simon Willison confirms that GitHub Models has been officially retired. The service previously offered a model playground and a unified LLM API, with the major benefit of allowing GitHub Actions to execute prompts using the existing GitHub API key for low-cost automation.
GitHub did not disclose the reason for the shutdown, but Willison speculates that coding agent patterns made offering free or subsidized tokens prohibitively expensive. He has since swapped the service for an OpenAI API key with a spending limit, now using GPT-5.6 Luna to generate summaries.
