Pichai Admits Google's Best Model Is Shelved: The Bottleneck is Serving Cost, Not Intelligence

Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed in a conversation with Lex Fridman that the models widely used by the public are perhaps a few months behind the maximum capability they can deliver. The frontier models are held back because serving them to billions of users without losing money is currently impossible.
Pichai noted that benchmarks are increasingly incapable of capturing real-world effectiveness. In practical applications, latency often matters more than raw intelligence. A highly capable model is useless if it is too slow, which is why a dramatically faster model like Gemini Flash can be more impactful than the Pro version, fundamentally reshaping user workflows.
