Cursor Announces Origin: A Git Forge Built for the Agentic Era

amu4biz · reddit · 2026-08-09

AI coding tool Cursor quietly launched Origin, described as "a git forge for the agentic era," currently open via a waitlist.

The core thesis is that existing code hosting infrastructure like GitHub was built for humans and fails to accommodate agent-driven workflows. As agents increasingly open hundreds of PRs and trigger CI/CD loops autonomously, they require independent identities separate from human PATs, alongside review and merge mechanisms that don't rely on manual clicks.

However, the author notes that Origin, being a single-company platform, might not solve the fundamental pain points of centralized forges like outages or account suspensions. Decentralized, open-source alternatives like Gitlawb, which uses a federated mesh and Ed25519 keypairs for identity, could offer a more robust, protocol-level solution for agent-native development.
