FDE Role to Become Purely Sales? Ex-LlamaIndex Core Member Weighs In
HanchungLee · x · 2026-08-09
Regarding the future trajectory of Field Deployment Engineers (FDEs) in the AI era, Jerry Liu (formerly of LlamaIndex) believes their focus will tightly revolve around evals, post-training, and RL environments. The core responsibilities will evolve into defining business problems, translating them into eval rubrics/environments, and outputting agentic workflows to solve them.
However, Hanchung Lee, currently an FDE at Anthropic, offers a starkly different prediction. He pessimistically points out that constrained by commercial realities, almost all FDE roles will ultimately devolve into sales/implementation engineers or solution architects, which essentially boils down to sales.
