MIT's 'Implosion Carving' Shrinks 3D Photonic Devices to Channel Visible Light

MIT researchers have developed a technique called “implosion carving” capable of creating tiny 3D photonic devices with features small enough to channel visible light.
The method involves photopatterning features throughout a hydrogel and then shrinking it to about 1/2,000 of its original volume. Building on the “implosion fabrication” technique developed in 2018, this breakthrough could pave the way for future optical computing and photonic chips.
