Google AI Insiders Recall the 100-Day Sprint from LaMDA to Gemini

Google researcher Ed Chi recalled a critical moment in late 2022: while working heads-down on the LaMDA project, he and the team were called into action by CEO Sundar Pichai to launch a product in 100 days, which became the Bard experiment.
To meet the launch deadline, they rapidly scaled down the LaMDA model from 128B to 35B parameters. At the same time, Jeff Dean was already thinking about Gemini. Dean added that he wrote a memo in late 2022 proposing to bring the best minds at Brain and DeepMind together, which initiated the merger of the two orgs.
