IROS 2026 Launches Robotic Origami Challenge for Extreme Dexterity

IROS 2026 is introducing the Robotic Origami Challenge, a dexterous-manipulation competition and benchmark judged by the Nippon Origami Association.
- Task: Create a traditional paper airplane in exactly 6 folds from a 15×15 cm sheet (≥60 gsm) using a standardized rig with bimanual arms and Sharpa Hands.
- Format: Teams bring policies, not hardware. Remote and on-site participation available.
- Evaluation: An "Origami Grand Master" judges pass/fail based on crease accuracy, structural fidelity, and symmetry.
The author notes that if a robot can do origami, it can do practically anything, making it one of the coolest robotic problems to tackle right now.
