From Economic Agents to Agentic Economies: A Systems Blueprint for Economic World Models

This paper explores the construction of Economic World Models (EWMs)—generative models that simulate economic dynamics by modeling heterogeneous agents, their interactions, and market and institutional mechanisms.
The authors propose a six-level EWM capability ladder:
- From fixed rule-based agent worlds
- To adaptive and LLM-based agent worlds
- Evolving into self-evolving agents and evolving institutional worlds
- Culminating in sim-to-real economic twins aligned with real observations
The study notes that current research remains concentrated at lower levels, while systems featuring self-evolving agents, endogenous institutions, and persistent empirical alignment are still rare. By translating the EWM agenda into an implementation blueprint, the authors aim to accelerate the development of next-generation economic simulation environments, serving both as high-fidelity sandboxes for human decision-makers and as training, planning, and safety substrates for AI agents.
