Replit Founder Notes They Were Training Custom LLMs Back in Early 2023
amasad · x · 2026-08-07
Replit founder Amjad Masad pointed out that the company was ahead of the curve, having started training its own LLMs as early as March/April 2023.
He linked to a detailed Replit engineering blog post outlining their process and challenges of training LLMs from scratch:
- Motivation: The primary drivers for training custom models are deep customization (platform-specific capabilities and terminology), reduced dependency on big tech, and cost efficiency.
- Tech Stack: Replit invested heavily in infrastructure, leveraging vendors like Databricks, Hugging Face, and MosaicML.
- Use Case: Although the models are primarily intended for code generation, the engineering lessons shared are applicable to general LLM training.
