CMU and Princeton Propose AI-Empowered Intelligent Labs for Scientific Discovery

MengdiWang10 · x · 2026-08-07

Researchers released two new preprints detailing the concept of "intelligent labs" designed to drive scientific innovation, a collaborative effort involving CMU, Princeton University, and Genentech.

The perspective argues that next-generation labs should be human-in-the-lead and AI-empowered. By integrating human intent, machine reasoning, and physical experimentation through scientific world models and an agentic harnessing layer, these systems aim to make scientific discovery more programmable, reproducible, and scalable, allowing scientists to focus on higher-level reasoning.
