Terence Tao describes the complementary strengths of humans and AI: AI can traverse millions of papers, testing combinations and surfacing buried connections that no human could attempt, while humans can generalize patterns from very few examples. The optimal strategy is to let the machine "excavate" the signal from vast data, then hand it to a human mind built to see structure. This moves the bottleneck from information to imagination, though Tao predicts machines may learn human-like generalization in 10-20 years.
