LeCun and Researchers Debate: The Bottleneck for AI is Verification, Not Compute

A recent discussion around OpenAI's math results highlights a core technical viewpoint: the bottleneck for AI progress was never compute, but the verifier. Compute buys proposals, while verifiers buy knowledge. Thus, recursive self-improvement is fundamentally limited by verification.

Yann LeCun echoed this sentiment, noting that while the masses were distracted by the alignment problem, the real challenge all along has been the verification problem—how an observer can objectively evaluate its own self-improvement.
