AI Makes Open Source Devtools Crucial: Fork Maintenance is Nearly Free

In a recent blog post, David Crawshaw revisits the argument that "devtools must be open source," noting that it resonates differently in the AI era of 2026.
Historically, engineers rarely wrote or deeply customized software for themselves because maintaining a personal fork was extraordinarily painful and expensive. Now, however, developers can use AI agents to set up nightly cron jobs that automatically rebase local patches onto upstream codebases and verify the build.
This cheap AI labor reduces the cost of modifying and maintaining bespoke tools to almost zero, finally making the old ideal of freely modifying one's own tools a practical reality.
