CMU and Genentech Outline Human-Led AI Agent Framework for Life Science Labs

A collaboration between CMU, Genentech, and Medra AI released a Perspective addressing the reality gap of autonomous experimentation in biology.
The authors advocate for human-led, verifiability-first autonomy. Systems should produce machine-checkable evidence, detect and recover from failures, and preserve provenance, while keeping human scientists responsible for biological interpretation and high-consequence decisions.
The paper also outlines appropriate scenarios for AI autonomy today, suggesting that poorly standardized, high-risk, or ethically sensitive experiments should remain limited or deferred.
