OpenAI Engineer: Building a Pure Go Opus Decoder for GPT-Live

juberti · x · 2026-08-07

An OpenAI engineer shared details about the underlying infrastructure optimization for the GPT-Live real-time voice project. To improve performance and security, they collaborated with the open-source community Pion to build a production-quality Opus decoder written entirely in Go.

This decoder is now being used in OpenAI's systems. It supports the full Opus bitstream, offers performance close to the C version, and provides much better security. The code has been open-sourced on GitHub.
