OpenAI Proposes WARP Protocol: Reduces WebRTC Connection Latency from 6 RTTs to 2

Justin Uberti of OpenAI and Philipp Hancke of Meta have co-authored a new network protocol draft called WARP (WebRTC Abridged Roundtrip Protocol). The protocol optimizes WebRTC session setup by addressing inefficiencies in the current multi-protocol handshake, drastically reducing connection setup latency from 6 RTTs to 2 RTTs.

The authors note that web apps can already leverage most of WARP's benefits today via Chrome's DTLS 1.3 support and the SNAP origin trial. This improvement will directly enhance the responsiveness of real-time AI voice and video interactions.
