The Black at Mila community recently hosted a session on the future of African language AI. Professor Vukosi Marivate, co-founder of Lelapa AI, pointed out that current NLP benchmarks are designed for high-resource languages and fail to capture the full linguistic reality of African contexts.

He advocated for new evaluation frameworks that reflect linguistic diversity and community priorities. Following the talk, Yoshua Bengio joined Marivate for a discussion on AI safety, governance, and the priorities shaping global AI development.
