Vercel Details Agent Plugins: A Unified Standard to End AI Tool Fragmentation
cramforce · x · 2026-08-07
Vercel's engineering team detailed the newly launched Agent Plugins open standard. As AI agents evolve, the community has repeatedly had to invent new mechanisms for installing MCPs and discovering skills in coding agents, leading to severe fragmentation.
Agent Plugins aim to provide a unified packaging and distribution format. It bundles Agent Skills (instructions and resources) and MCP server configurations into a single directory with a plugin.json manifest. This vendor-neutral standard allows extension authors to write a component once and run it across compatible clients, ensuring future agent capabilities can easily fit into the plugin ecosystem.
