PMs in Applied AI: Domain Expertise and Stakeholder Alignment Beat Pure Engineering

The author argues that Product Managers (PMs) shouldn't hold back from applied AI out of fear of looking less technical to engineers.

While classic engineers can build highly rigorous systems, most applied AI needs don't require that level of engineering weight. Engineers often struggle with messy business processes, unstructured domain data, and customer-facing contexts.

In contrast, PMs with years of experience managing human processes and stakeholder alignment bring crucial domain expertise. With modern LLMs, syntax is cheap; the hardest part is understanding what to build, why it needs to be built, and who to win over for adoption.
