Researcher: Rule-Based Guardrails Are Not Intrinsic Intelligence

Researcher Andrew Lampinen points out a fundamental difference between the rule-based constraints wrapping modern LLMs and the original vision of neurosymbolic AI advocates.
Citing related literature, he notes that early neurosymbolic approaches expected symbol manipulation to handle the core 'intelligent' parts of a system. In contrast, today's safety wrappers and behavioral constraints (like requiring code to pass tests or phishing alerts) act more like external guardrails. While humans also benefit from such rules, these mechanisms should not be mistaken for the model's intrinsic intelligence.
