Astera Institute announced a shift in its funding policy, prohibiting the use of its funds or researchers' time for chasing editorial outcomes or traditional journal peer review. The institute argues that secret pre-publication review by a few gatekeepers delays science and restricts the dissemination of highly collaborative work.
Instead, they emphasize that true rigor lies in research being reused, tested orthogonally, and holding up over time under broader scrutiny. Consequently, they require all funded research to be released as preprints, with all underlying data, metadata, code, and protocols made available under open licenses upon public release.
