From $5M to $500: How AI is Obsoleting Traditional Startup Methodology
popcornjebus · reddit · 2026-08-06
The author maps out the historical decline in software startup costs: from about $5M in 2000 (servers, Oracle licenses, salaried engineers) to around $50K by 2010 thanks to open source and AWS, and now compressed to roughly $500 by AI.
Data backs this up: An NBER study shows the number of first-round-funded software startups nearly doubled after AWS launched. Meanwhile, Y Combinator reports that for a quarter of its Winter 2025 batch, 95% of code was written by AI, with companies hitting $10M in revenue with under ten people.
Core Thesis: Traditional startup methodologies built on expensive trial-and-error (like "validate before you build" or "spend months on an MVP") are now actively harmful. Today, building a product over a weekend with AI is often cheaper and faster than scheduling user interviews. Validation-by-shipping beats validation-by-asking, as people are better at reacting to a tangible product than describing what they want.
