Beyond Pure LLMs: Equipping Transformers with Tool Use and Recursion

lateinteraction · x · 2026-08-06

Responding to recent mockery in the AI community directed at Yann LeCun and others for criticizing "pure LLMs," the author argues that a Transformer equipped with a scratchpad, offloaded context, PTC, and recursion is unequivocally no longer a pure DNN.

This architectural evolution is why current models exceed plain old GPT-4 with RLHF. The author challenges detractors to prove that pure differentiable operations can exhibit the same scaling and generalization behavior without relying on a tool environment.
