OpenAI Warns Fully Automated AI Cyberattacks Are Real, Urges Defensive Acceleration

Speaking at Black Hat, OpenAI addressed the recent frontier model security incident, stressing an urgent need for "defensive agent acceleration."
OpenAI noted that while agent-orchestrated, fully-automated offensive attacks were an unintended side effect of running evaluations, the threat is now real. They warned that threat actors will soon intentionally optimize and deploy AI agent collectives to launch cyberattacks at scale, highlighting the escalating AI cybersecurity arms race.
