Readers Prefer AI-Generated Stories, Especially When Told They're Human-Written

Researchers at Villanova University found that readers struggle to distinguish between human and AI-generated stories, often rating AI content higher in quality and engagement.
The study, published in Judgment and Decision Making, involved over 1,600 participants aged 18 to 81 rating short fictional stories written by humans and ChatGPT. Key findings include:
- Preference Reversal: Participants gave higher quality ratings to AI-generated stories when they believed they were written by humans. Senior author Dr. Deena Weisberg noted that readers prefer the "clarity" and predictability typical of AI writing.
- Detection & Literacy: Familiarity with specific textual patterns helps identify AI-written text. Improving AI literacy will help people navigate an AI-enabled world.
- The findings challenge the assumption that creative writing relies solely on uniquely human qualities like emotional understanding.
