Transformer Supply Side Mapped, But Successor Architecture Capabilities Remain Unknown

A perspective highlights that while the supply side for Transformers doing next-token prediction is reasonably well mapped, the capabilities and economics of successor architectures remain completely unknown. There is definitely a compute and capability overhang, but exactly how many orders of magnitude it represents is still an open question.
