Sad Robot Keeps Hitting on Portraits: Dev Breaks Down the Spatial Recognition Problem

A developer shared a funny fail from their robot: because it relies on face detection to initiate conversations, it often mistakes portrait paintings on the wall for real humans and tries to chat them up.

To fix this, the developer analyzed potential signals to discriminate between live humans and portraits: portraits are stable over long durations, don't produce localized speech, and exhibit geometric distortion as 2D planes. They proposed that the robot needs to build a lightweight world model of its environment, collecting images over time across different orientations and lighting to properly filter out portraits.
