Sequoia's 20-Year Hype Analysis: Top Companies Rarely Match Era's Biggest Trends
Konstantine · x · 2026-08-06
Sequoia Capital analyzed 20 years of tech hype data (primarily from Hacker News) to uncover the relationship between internet trends and enduring companies:
- Chasing hype rarely works: The hottest topic of a given year rarely aligns with the top company founded then. Airbnb launched in 2008 (peak Google hype), and Anthropic was founded in 2021 (peak crypto frenzy).
- Trends need 5-6 years to mature: LLMs first cracked the top 15 topics in 2016 and hit #1 in 2022. AI coding entered the list in 2021 and is projected to top it in 2026.
- Sustained hype is a real signal: Subjects maintaining long-term attention, like the "Musk-Verse" staying in the top 15 for 14 consecutive years, usually indicate something fundamentally real.
