Modal Rebuilds Sandbox Platform to Create 1M Concurrent Containers in Under a Minute

Cloud infrastructure platform Modal detailed the rebuild of its core sandbox platform in a recent blog post. To meet the extreme demands for massive, highly concurrent sandboxes required by autonomous agents and reinforcement learning, Modal removed all central bottlenecks from its control plane.
The scheduling path was simplified to a layer of load balancers that create containers directly on the worker fleet. The new system can run 1 million concurrent sandboxes, creating them all in under a minute, with creation rates reaching tens of thousands per second. This architectural upgrade removes practical scaling limits, clearing infra obstacles for large-scale agent operations.
