Knowledge Flywheels: A New Scaling Dimension for AI Agents is Emerging
yisongyue · x · 2026-08-06
Yi Song Yue published an in-depth article titled Knowledge Flywheels, exploring a third scaling dimension for AI systems following model and agent scaling: Knowledge Scaling.
The Three Dimensions of Scaling
- Model Scaling: Improving the reasoner through better data, architectures, and compute.
- Agent Scaling: Expanding task capabilities via better tools, search, verification, and harnesses.
- Knowledge Scaling: Distilling reusable insights from agent experience (e.g., architectural constraints, recurring failures, better search strategies) to build a foundation for the next task.
From Experience to Knowledge
The author points out that while AI systems generate vast amounts of experience, they rarely convert it into reusable knowledge. Without proper curation, these lessons remain tied to individual runs, forcing subsequent tasks to rediscover the same issues. The goal of building a "knowledge flywheel" is to systematically curate this implicit experience, enabling future tasks to build upon past learnings.
